  33. The Personal Details Window is used to enter and/or edit details about the
  34. people that make up the database, and the Family Details Window is used to
  35. establish the family relationships between these people.
  36.  
  37. Details on the various people making up the database should be entered
  38. FIRST and then the relationships between them can be established.
  39.  
  40. Scion Genealogist has been written in a totally non-sexist and secular
  41. manner, has no checking on sex (to allow for unconventional
  42. relationships), and has no name checking (to allow for adopted children).
  43. Because of the non-sexist nature of the programme, the partners of a family
  44. group (or marriage) are referred to as "Principal" and "Spouse". Either
  45. partner can be the Principal. However, to conform with genealogical
  46. conventions, when reports are printed the male partner is automatically
  47. "promoted" to Principal and male parents are displayed first.

  49. Every person and family in the database is identified by a unique number:

  57. Every person in the database is automatically assigned a unique IRN. These
  58. numbers will NEVER change, even if people are deleted from the database. A
  59. deleted person's IRN will be automatically reassigned whenever a new person
  60. is added to the database.

  63.                       FGRN - Family Group Record Number
  64. =============================================================================

  66. Every family in the database is automatically assigned a unique FGRN.
  67. These numbers will NEVER change, even if families are deleted from the
  68. database. A deleted family's FGRN will be automatically reassigned whenever
  69. a new family is added to the database.

  77. The Personal Details Window is used to enter and/or edit details about the
  78. people that make up the database.

  80. Details on the various people making up the database should be entered
  81. FIRST and then the relationships between them can be established.

  83. If, at any time, the Personal Details Window you move to has all the fields
  84. "ghosted", this means that somebody's record has been deleted from the
  85. database. What you are seeing is the position that was "reserved" for that
  86. person, and this will be reassigned when a new person is added to the
  87. database. Just step over the disabled window using the usual gadgets.

  90.                 Entering and Editing Personal Information
  91. =============================================================================

  93. When a new person is added to the database (by clicking the mouse on the
  94. Add New Person gadget) or when an existing database is opened, the
  95. Personal Details Window displayed is where information about each person
  96. may be edited or added.
  97.  
  98. To enter or edit information in a particular field, just click on that
  99. field. For example, to enter the birth date just click on the Birth Date
  100. field and then type in the date.  Pressing RETURN or TAB will automatically
  101. take you to the next field (in this example, the Birth Place field).
  102. Pressing Shift-TAB will take you to the preceding field. See also Dates.
  103.  
  104. To reduce the amount of typing required, and to help ensure that Last Names
  105. are consistent, use the Pick gadget located beside the Last Name entry
  106. field. Select (from the list displayed) the Last Name that you want entered
  107. into the Last Name field.

  112.                                  Dates
  113. =============================================================================

  115. All date fields are "free form" fields, to allow for entries such as
  116. "About 1983", and NO checking is carried out on the date entered. However,
  117. it is strongly recommended that you enter dates in the format
  118. "3 Jan 1956". Do NOT use dates such as "3/1/56".  This could mean either
  119. 3 January 1956 or 1 March 1956. Equally it could mean 1856 and not 1956.
  120.  
  121. Date fields are limited to 12 characters which enforces the use of the
  122. genealogical convention of using three character names for the months.
  123. For example, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr....
  124.  
  125. Again to conform to general convention, the date field could contain one
  126. of the following "modifiers":
  127.  
  128.         Bef (or Before)         Actual date is before the given date
  129.         Abt (or About)          Actual date is approximately the given date
  130.         Aft (or After)          Actual date is after the given date.
  131.  
  132. Where an event date is known to be within a range (such as between 1876
  133. and 1879), enter the FIRST date in the appropriate date field, and make
  134. a note in the "comments" field about the possible range.
  135.  
  136. Where an event date is uncertain or unverified, add a question mark as
  137. the last character of the date. For example, 5 Jun 1974?
  138.  
  139. If this convention is adhered to, Scion Genealogist will list the children
  140. of a family group sorted by date of birth.

  151.                   Navigating Around the Personal Database

  154. The move around the Personal Database, use the "SELECT PERSON" gadgets:
  155.  
  156.       |½  Select the first person (in IRN numerical order)
  157.       ½½  Select the previous person (in IRN numerical order)
  158.      LIST Display selection list of the people in the database
  159.       ╗╗  Select the next person (in IRN numerical order)
  160.       ╗|  Select the last person (in IRN numerical order)

  162. The IRN (Individual Record Number) of the currently displayed database
  163. entry is displayed at the bottom centre of the window.
  164.  
  165. To go directly to a particular person's record when their IRN is known,
  166. click on the ^ gadget at the bottom centre of the screen and type in
  167. the IRN for that person. (Remember to press <RETURN>)
  168.  
  169. To search for (and go to the entry for) a particular person in the
  170. database, the Personal Search gadget can be used.
  171.  
  172. To locate a particular ancestor, and go to the entry for a particular
  173. ancestor, use the Anc (Ancestors) gadget.
  174.  
  175. To locate a particular descendant, and go to the entry for a particular
  176. descendant, use the Desc (Descendants) gadget.
  177.  
  178. To locate the current person's father, and go to his entry, use the
  179. Fath (Father) gadget.
  180.  
  181. To locate the current person's mother, and go to her entry, use the
  182. Moth (Mother) gadget.

  199.                               Pick Gadget

  202. Every time that the <RETURN> key is pressed while in the Last Name entry
  203. field, that last name is checked against a list of names maintained in the
  204. "Last Name Pick List". If the current name is unique, it is added to that
  205. pick list. This list maintains the 8 most recent unique last names entered.
  206.  
  207. To transfer a last name from the pick list into the Last Name entry field,
  208. simply click on the appropriate name in the list. That name will then be
  209. transferred into the Last Name field where it may be accepted or edited.
  210.  
  211. This reduces the amount of typing required, and also ensures consistent
  212. spelling of last names.
  213.

  217.                         "|½" (First Person) Gadget

  220. Clicking on the "|½" (First Person) gadget will take you to the window for
  221. the first person in the database (in IRN numerical order).

  223. If the "|½" (First Person) gadget is "ghosted" (shaded grey) it means that
  224. you are already at the first person in the database and the gadget will do
  225. nothing.

  228.                       "½½" (Previous Person) Gadget

  231. Clicking on the "½½" (Previous Person) gadget will take you to the window
  232. for the preceding person (in IRN numerical order).

  234. If the "½½" (Previous Person) gadget is "ghosted" (shaded grey) it means
  235. that you are at the first person in the database and the gadget will do
  236. nothing.

  239.                             List People Gadget
  240. =============================================================================

  242. Clicking on the "LIST" gadget will display a list of every person in the
  243. database.
  244.  
  245. By default, the list of people is in IRN numerical order. If you would
  246. prefer the list to be in alphabetical order, before displaying the list,
  247. select Extras from the menu bar and choose the Sorting On/Off
  248. menu item.
  249.  
  250. If the lists are sorted, an [S] marker will be displayed in the window
  251. title bar. If the lists are not sorted, this marker will be absent.
  252.  
  253. If you are using a colour monitor, males will be displayed in blue and
  254. females will be displayed in red. If a person's sex has not been defined,
  255. their entry in the list will be displayed in yellow.
  256.  
  257. To display a particular person's Personal Details Window, simply click on
  258. that person in the list.  Selecting "Cancel" will return you to the
  259. original window.
  260.  
  261. The number displayed at the bottom centre of the Personal Details Window is
  262. the current IRN.

  267.                         "╗╗" (Next Person) Gadget

  270. Clicking on the "╗╗" (Next Person) gadget will take you to the window for
  271. the next person (in IRN numerical order).

  273. If the "╗╗" (Next Person) gadget is "ghosted" (shaded grey) it means that
  274. there are no more people in the database and the gadget will do nothing.

  277.                        "╗|" (Last Person) Gadget

  280. Clicking on the "╗|" (Last Person) gadget will take you to the window for
  281. the last person in the database (in IRN numerical order).

  283. If the "╗|" (Last Person) gadget is "ghosted" (shaded grey) it means that
  284. there are no more people in the database and the gadget will do nothing.

  287.                             Edit Notes Gadget
  288. =============================================================================

  290. Clicking on the "Edit Notes" gadget will display a file requester where
  291. you can enter the name of the free-form note that you wish to edit. The
  292. editor that will be used is defined using the Choose Editor option under
  293. the Prefs menu.
  294.  
  295. By default the notes are assigned the name PNx.database, where "PN" stands
  296. for "Personal Notes", "x" is the IRN of the current person displayed, and
  297. "database" is the name of the database. The name of the database is defined
  298. when you save the database.
  299.  
  300. The default name can be ignored, and the notes file can be given any name.
  301. (Note that the "pattern" field in the file requester may have to be
  302. changed so that you can see files with other than the default names. Enter
  303. #? as the pattern to see ALL files.)

  305. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "N".

  308.                              View Picture Gadget
  309. =============================================================================
  310.  
  311. Clicking on the "View Picture" gadget will display a file requester where
  312. you can enter the name of the IFF picture file that you wish to view. The
  313. viewer that will be used is defined using the Choose Viewer option under
  314. the Prefs menu.
  315.  
  316. By default the pictures are assigned the name PPx.database, where "PP"
  317. stands for "Personal Picture", "x" is the IRN of the current person
  318. displayed, and "database" is the name of the database. The name of the
  319. database is defined when you save the database.
  320.  
  321. The default name can be ignored, and the picture file can be given any
  322. name.  (Note that the "pattern" field in the file requester may have to be
  323. changed so that you can see files with other than the default names. Enter
  324. #? as the pattern to see ALL files.)

  326. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "V".

  329.                            Personal Search Gadget
  330. =============================================================================
  331.  
  332. This gadget allows you to search for a particular individual in the
  333. database.
  334.  
  335. After clicking on the "Personal Search" gadget you will be presented
  336. with a requester asking for "Last Name" and "First Names".  Type the
  337. name of the person you are trying to find into these fields, and then
  338. click on "Find First" to find (and display) the Personal Details
  339. Window for the first person in the database matching your entries.
  340.  
  341. If the name fields already contain the name(s) that you want (from a
  342. previous search) click on "Find Next" to move to the Personal Details
  343. Window for the next person in the database matching your entries, or
  344. click on "Find Prev" to move to the Personal Details Window for the
  345. previous person in the database matching your entries.
  346.  
  347. To "browse" the database for people with the same last name (for example),
  348. from the Personal details window (with no data entry field active)
  349. press "P" to bring up the search requester, and then either "N" or "P" to
  350. find the next or previous person with that same last name.
  351.  
  352. In this way, repeatedly pressing "P" then "N" will progressively display
  353. the next person in the database with the name of interest.
  354.  
  355. NOTE: This same technique may be used to "browse" families, but
  356.       the search will be initiated by pressing the "F" key (for
  357.       "Family Search", and then followed by "N" or "P".
  358.  
  359. On first starting the programme, the Last Name and First Name(s)
  360. fields will contain "?*". This represents a Wildcard matching ANY
  361. person in the database. In this (default) case, clicking on "Find Next"
  362. will take you to the Personal Details Window for the next person in IRN
  363. numerical order.
  364.  
  365. If the screen flashes when carrying out a search, that means that there are
  366. no more matching entries in the database.
  367.  
  368. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "P".
  369.

  371.                           Add New Person Gadget
  372. =============================================================================
  373.  
  374. To add a new person to the database, click on the "Add New Person" gadget.
  375. After confirming that that is what you want to do, you will be presented
  376. with a blank Personal Details Window (assigned the next available IRN) and
  377. information about the new person can immediately be entered.
  378.  
  379. If the programme behaviour is set to "no confirmation" (using the
  380. "Confirm 'Add Person'" option), the programme will not ask to confirm the
  381. addition of the new person. See Set Behaviour
  382.  
  383. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "A".

  386.                           Delete Person Gadget
  387. =============================================================================
  388.  
  389. To remove a person from the database, click on the "Delete Person" gadget.
  390. You will be asked to confirm your actions before the record is actually
  391. removed.  Not only will the person's Personal Details Window data be
  392. deleted, but ALL references to that person as a child of a family or a
  393. partner in a marriage will also be removed.  Any marriages that the person
  394. was a partner in will be dissolved, and the person will no longer be a
  395. parent of any of the children of that family group.
  396.  
  397. WARNING: Once you have removed a person from the database, their
  398.          information is irretrievably lost, and their IRN and
  399.          corresponding Personal Details Window are available for
  400.          reassignment.
  401.  
  402. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "D".

  405.                           Set 1st Marriage Gadget
  406. =============================================================================
  407.  
  408. If there are no marriages recorded for the current person, clicking on the
  409. "Set 1st Marriage" gadget will, after confirmation, create a family group
  410. corresponding to the first marriage of this person. A spouse and any
  411. children may then be added to the resulting family group.
  412.  
  413. If the gadget is "ghosted" (shaded grey) it means that the first marriage
  414. has already been established for this person and the gadget will do
  415. nothing. You can go to the Family Details Window for the (established)
  416. first marriage by clicking on the Spouse/Children gadget.
  417.  
  418. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "M".

  421.                         Parents/Siblings Gadget

  424. Clicking on the "Parents/Siblings" gadget will take you to the Family
  425. Details Window for the person's parents where the person's siblings
  426. (brothers and sisters) are also displayed.

  428. People have their parents established when a person is added to a family
  429. group as a child.
  430.  
  431. The keyboard shortcut for this gadget is "S".

  437. If a family group (marriage) is established for this person, clicking on
  438. this gadget will take you to the first Family Details Window for that
  439. person.

  447. Clicking on the "Family List..." gadget will display a list of every family
  448. in the database. The list of families is in FGRN numerical order.

  451. that family in the list.  Selecting "Cancel" will return you to the
  452. original window.

  460. If the FGRN of a family of interest is known and you want to move directly
  461. to their Family Details Window, click on this gadget and type in the FGRN

  463. Window for that family will be displayed.

  465. To return to the Personal Details Window for the current person, select
  466. the "Cancel" gadget.

  474. Clicking on the "Fath" gadget will move to the Personal Details Window
  475. for the father of the currently displayed person.

  477. NOTE: If there is no father defined (only a mother), then clicking on
  478. this gadget will cause the screen to flash. Similarly, if the father's
  479. "sex" field does not contain an "M" (for male), clicking on this gadget
  480. cause the screen to flash.

  486. Clicking on the "Moth" gadget will move to the Personal Details Window
  487. for the mother of the currently displayed person.

  489. NOTE: If there is no mother defined (only a father), then clicking on
  490. this gadget will cause the screen to flash. Similarly, if the mother's
  491. "sex" field does not contain an "F" (for female), clicking on this gadget
  492. cause the screen to flash.

  495.                             Ancestors Gadget
  496. =============================================================================
  497.  
  498. Clicking on the "Anc" gadget will display an on-screen ancestor chart
  499. for the current person. To move to the Personal Details Window for a
  500. particular ancestor, click on their name in the ancestor chart. To return
  501. to the Personal Details Window for the current person, select the "Cancel"
  502. gadget.

  505.                           Descendants Gadget

  508. Clicking on the "Desc" gadget will display an on-screen descendant
  509. chart for the current person. To move to the Personal Details Window for
  510. a particular descendant, click on their name in the descendant chart. To
  511. return to the Personal Details Window for the current person, select the
  512. "Cancel" gadget.

  518. If the IRN of a person of interest is known and you want to move directly
  519. to their Personal Details Window, click on this gadget and type in the IRN

  532. The Family Group Window displays the Principal, Spouse and children making
  533. up a family group and is where information about each family group may be
  534. edited or added.

  536. When you select "Spouse/Children" or "Parents/Siblings" from a Personal
  537. Details Window, you will automatically change to the appropriate Family
  538. Details Window.
  539.  
  540. You will also automatically change to the appropriate Family Details
  541. Window when you create the first marriage for a person by selecting the
  542. "Set 1st Marriage" gadget.

  903. in a marriage.  Type the name of the person whose marriages you are trying
  904. to find into these fields, and then click on "Find First" to find (and
  905. display) the Family Details Window for the first marriage in the database
  906. matching your entries.

  908. If the name fields already contain the name(s) that you want (from a
  909. previous search) click on "Find Next" to move to the Family Details Window
  910. for the next marriage in the database matching your entries, or click on
  911. "Find Prev" to move to the Family Details Window for the previous marriage
  912. in the database matching your entries.

  914. To "browse" the database for families with the same spouse (for example),
  915. from the Family details window (with no data entry field active)
  916. press "F" to bring up the search requester, and then either "N" or "P" to
  917. find the next or previous family with that same spouse.

  919. In this way, repeatedly pressing "F" then "N" will progressively display
  920. the next family in the database with the spouse of interest.

  922. NOTE: This same technique may be used to "browse" people, but
  923.       the search will be initiated by pressing the "P" key (for

  926. On first starting the programme, the Last Name and First Name(s)
  927. fields will contain "?*". This represents a Wildcard matching ANY
  928. person in the database. In this (default) case, clicking on "Find Next"
  929. will take you to the Family Details Window for the next marriage in FGRN

  933. no more matching entries in the database.

  2439.       before you start (with all the inter-personal and family relations
  2440.       sorted out). It will make things MUCH easier if you have a good
  2441.       idea what you are planning to do before you start!

  2443.       It is recommended that you enter all the information you can about
  2444.       the various people making up your database FIRST, working in the
  2445.       Personal Details Windows. Then establish the relationships between
  2446.       these people by "marrying" couples and adding children to the
  2447.       resulting family groups.  Parents are established by adding people
  2448.       to a family group as children.

  2451. HOW DO I GET THE PROGRAMME TO PRINT THE LIST OF PEOPLE IN THE DATABASE
  2452. IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER INSTEAD OF IN NUMERICAL ORDER?
  2453.       Before printing the report, select Extras from the menu bar and
  2454.       choose the Sorting On/Off menu item.

  2456.       If the report is to be printed alphabetically, an [S] ("sorted")
  2457.       marker will be displayed in the window title bar. If the report is
  2458.       to be printed in IRN numerical order, this marker will be absent.

  2460. HOW DO I PRINT REPORTS TO A DISK FILE RATHER THAN TO THE PRINTER?
  2461.       Use the AmigaDOS command "CMD" to re-direct printer output to a file.

  2469.       Use the printing features of your chosen text editor to print the
  2470.       notes. If your editor does not support printing, use the AmigaDOS

  2472.       information.

  2474. HOW DO I ASSIGN A NAME TO MY DATABASE?
  2475.       When you select the Save As... item from the Project menu you are
  2476.       presented with a file requester. Simply type the new name for your
  2477.       database in the box near the bottom of the requester. The name of
  2478.       the database will also be used as a "suffix" for your free form
  2479.       notes and picture files.
  2480.  
  2481.       NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you "name" your database as
  2482.             soon as you start working on it. For example, add one person
  2483.             to the database and then save the database with a suitable
  2484.             name. This will then establish its name (for notes, etc).

  2487. I TRY TO LOAD MY DATABASE FILE AND NOTHING HAPPENS!
  2488.       It probably means that your database file is too big for the
  2489.       remaining memory in your computer. Either:

  2491.       (1) you created the database on a computer with more memory, in
  2492.           which case you will need to continue with the other computer
  2493.           or buy more memory, or
  2494.  
  2495.       (2) you have one or more other application programmes running at
  2496.           the moment, in which case you should close them down to free

  2531.       You have probably 'launched' Scion Genealogist via one of the
  2532.       utility 'launching' programmes such as "AmiDock", "ToolsDaemon",
  2533.       or "ToolsManager" with Scion Genealogist specified as a 'CLI'
  2534.       type of programme.
  2535.  
  2536.       These 'launching' programmes require you to specify whether the
  2537.       programme you wish to launch is a "CLI" or "Workbench" type of
  2538.       programme. To eliminate these "Error 103 detected" messages when
  2539.       using one of these 'launching' programmes, make sure you specify
  2540.       Scion Genealogist as a "Workbench" type programme.

  2542. WHAT ARE THE FILES NAMED "PN1.unnamed", "FN1.unnamed", ETC. THAT I
  2543. FIND IN MY DATABASE DIRECTORY (DRAWER)?
  2544.       You have created free form notes without first naming the database.
  2545.       Refer to Edit Personal Notes and Edit Family Notes

  2548. HOW DO I MARRY A PERSON MORE THAN ONCE?
  2549.       Establish the first marriage for the person by clicking on the
  2550.       Set 1st Marriage gadget in the Personal Details Window for
  2551.       that person. This will place you in the first Family Details Window
  2552.       with that person as "Principal".
  2553.  
  2554.       To create another marriage for that Principal, click on the
  2555.       New Marriage gadget in the Family Details Window. You will be
  2556.       asked if you want to create a new family group for that Principal.
  2557.       Answer "yes" and continue as you did for the first marriage by first
  2558.       adding a new Spouse (for the second marriage) and then adding the
  2559.       children of the second marriage.

  2562. HOW DO I MAKE THE "SPOUSE" IN A FAMILY DETAILS WINDOW INTO THE "PRINCIPAL"?

  2568.       (2) From the Family Details Window, click on the S (Select Spouse)

  2574. HOW DO I CHANGE THE SPOUSE IN A FAMILY GROUP TO A DIFFERENT PERSON?
  2575.       From the appropriate Family Details Window, click on the
  2576.       Set Spouse gadget. You will be asked if you wish to remove
  2577.       the existing spouse and (optionally) replace with a new spouse.

  2579.       Answer "yes".

  2581.       You will then be presented with a list of the people currently in
  2582.       the database. Click on the name of the person that you wish to be
  2583.       the new spouse.

  2585. HOW DO I DELETE A SPOUSE FROM A FAMILY GROUP?
  2586.       From the appropriate Family Details Window, click on the
  2587.       Set Spouse gadget. You will be asked if you wish to remove
  2588.       the existing spouse and (optionally) replace with a new spouse.

  2590.       Answer "yes".

  2592.       At this point the existing spouse will be removed, and you will be
  2593.       presented with a list of the people currently in the database. Click
  2594.       on the "Cancel" gadget at the bottom of the list. The original

  2597.       NOTE: If you need to re-instate the original spouse to the family
  2598.             group, click on the "Set Spouse" gadget again and add
  2599.             them (from the displayed list) to the family group.

  2601. HOW DO I QUICKLY MOVE FROM PERSON TO PERSON WHERE ALL THE PEOPLE OF
  2602. INTEREST HAVE THE SAME LAST NAME?
  2603.       Click on "Personal Search" gadget, and enter the last name in which
  2604.       you are interested into the Last Name field of the requester. Click
  2605.       on "Find First", "Find Next" or "Find Prev" to locate the next
  2606.       person.
  2607.  
  2608.       From the Personal details window (with no data entry field active)
  2609.       press "P" to bring up the search requester, and then either "N" or
  2610.       "P" to find the next or previous person with that same last name.
  2611.  
  2612.       In this way, repeatedly pressing "P" then "N" will progressively
  2613.       display the next person in the database with the name of interest.
  2614.  
  2615.       NOTE: This same technique may be used to "browse" families, but
  2616.             the search will be initiated by pressing the "F" key (for
  2617.             "Family Search", and then followed by "N" or "P".

  2619. I HAVE MORE THAN 1000 PEOPLE IN MY DATABASE. HOW DO I COPE WITH THIS?
  2620.       Split your database in half. For example, if you are tracing your
  2621.       OWN family tree, try making one database starting with your father
